Pre- and Aftercare
Precare
Good preparation is crucial for beautiful permanent makeup! The result depends not only on the pigmentation itself but also on how well your skin is prepared. The pigmented area should be healthy, intact, and free from irritation to achieve optimal results.
Please arrive with the area to be pigmented free of makeup. For a freckle appointment, we also ask you to remove your eye makeup, as you may tear up. If necessary, we also have makeup remover available at the studio for you.
How to best prepare:
Avoid excessive bleeding and improve color retention
- Do not consume alcohol 24-48 hours before the procedure.
- Avoid caffeine 12 hours before the treatment.
- Do not take blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen 24 hours prior.
- Avoid exercise on the day of the procedure.
- Do not pluck or wax the area to be treated for at least one week prior.
- Avoid fish oil and Vitamin E (natural blood thinners) for one week prior.
- Do not come for treatment with sunburned skin.
- Do not have any facial treatments or peels two weeks before the appointment.
- Do not use Vitamin A/Retinol products four weeks before the treatment.
- If you have taken antibiotics or cortisone, this should be at least 4 weeks before the treatment. If you regularly take cortisone or other medications, please consult your doctor beforehand to discuss possible effects on the treatment.
Special instructions for lips and eyes:
- If you are prone to herpes, speak with your family doctor and take antiviral medication preventatively.
- Keep your lips well-hydrated and moisturized to avoid dryness. Dry lips can make pigmentation more difficult and painful.
- It is recommended that there be at least 8 weeks between a hyaluronic acid treatment of the lips and lip pigmentation. This is because pigmentation can affect and potentially reduce the hyaluronic acid.
- For eyeliner or lash line enhancements: Remove your lash extensions at least two weeks prior and care for your eyelids well. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before the treatment.
Healing phase:
Plan enough time for healing. In the first 5-7 days, redness, swelling, and slight scabbing may occur. During this time, you should keep the pigmented area as dry as possible and avoid applying makeup. Avoid sun exposure, which is why an appointment directly before a vacation in the south is not ideal. Also, MRI scans should be avoided after the treatment.

Aftercare
Immediately after the treatment, the area will be somewhat sensitive, and the color will initially appear more intense than the final result. Swelling, redness, and slight bruising may occur, which usually subside by 80% within the first three hours and completely disappear after 1-2 days. However, if unexpected complications such as persistent swelling, redness, inflammation, fever, or rash occur, please consult a doctor or a dermatology clinic and keep us informed. You may consume caffeine, alcohol, and painkillers again after the treatment. However, please note that alcohol and drugs can slow down the healing process.
Wound fluid may emerge during the first 24 hours. It is important to gently dab this regularly with a damp cotton pad to prevent the formation of a thick scab.
Immediately after the treatment, you will receive a special care cream and an information card with all important instructions from us, so you are optimally prepared for the healing phase. More product recommendations can be found further down in the text.
The next day, the pigmentation will appear darker as scabs form. Slight swelling or bruising may still be visible. The scab usually falls off after 3-10 days, depending on your skin and the type of treatment. After the scab falls off, the color may be very light and may darken slightly after about a week.
General care instructions:
- Keep the pigmented area dry and clean, avoid excessive contact with water. Light washing with mild cleanser is permitted.
- Apply a thin layer of cream to your pigmentation several times a day (not for lash line enhancement).
- Do not apply makeup products to the treated area until the scab has completely detached.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, as well as solariums and saunas, for at least two weeks.
- Refrain from intense physical activities to prevent excessive sweating.
- Do not use peels or aggressive skincare products (active cosmetics, such as acids, Vitamin C or A) in the first few weeks.
- Do not scratch, even if it itches. Itching is completely normal during the healing process!
Long-term care:
Permanent makeup fades over time – depending on the treatment, skin type, and lifestyle, within 1-5 years. To maintain the color intensity and beauty of your permanent makeup, touch-ups are necessary. Factors such as oily skin, iron deficiency, or a strong immune system can cause the pigment to fade faster or heal less defined. The fading process is stimulated by:
- dry skin; try to moisturize your pigmentation regularly
- UV radiation; please always use SPF 50 sunscreen on your pigmentation/tattoo
- active cosmetics
Additional treatments:
For cover-up work, i.e., over-pigmentation of existing permanent makeup, multiple sessions are often necessary to achieve the desired result. Old pigmentations cannot always be completely covered, especially if they were very dark or deeply applied.
For this reason, we are reluctant to accept external work. In recent decades, permanent makeup was often applied too intensely and deeply. This impairs our ability to implement delicate, natural pigmentations, as these would not stand out over the dark old PMU.
Therefore, we always recommend having the old PMU removed by laser before a new treatment. This allows us to start fresh and naturally. It is a long-term investment in your appearance and the quality of your pigmentation.
Furthermore, we do not refresh old work from other studios, only our own work. In these cases, the new price always applies.
Note on MRI scans:
During a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, slight irritation may occur at the tattooed site. However, no scientifically proven risks are known when using high-quality pigments approved in Europe.
We recommend these products for good healing:
- Tattoo Med After Tattoo Cream (face and body care)
- La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ (face care)
- CeraVe Cleansing Lotion (mild cleanser for dry skin)
- TattooMed Cleansing Gel (mild cleanser, for oily skin)
- Eucerin Aquaphor Protect & Repair Ointment (lip care)
- La Roche Posay Linea Cicaplast (lip care)
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Fluid SPF 50 (sun protection)
